SENATORS-ELECT REJECT AKPABIO
- Say he will destroy the institution
As battle for the Senate Presidency enters its crucial stage, there are clear indications that majority of the Senators-elect have distanced themselves from Senator Godswill Akpabio's aspiration.
Investigations revealed that most Senators who bare out their minds in condition of anonymity say, Akpabio is carrying what they termed "excessive negative baggages of high profile corruption charges both in the law court and before the country's antigraft agencies. They described the Akwa Ibom born senator as inconsistent in character and unreliable, one who cannot be entrusted with a position as critical as the Senate President federal republic of Nigeria which is the no. 3 citizen of the country.
The Senators argue that "records and experience have shown that Akpabio's tenure as Akwa Ibom governor, as Senator and subsequently as minister in the NDDC were marred with collosal disasters" saying that "how can such a person be trusted to lead high profile personalities of the 10th Assembly."
The Senators further revealed that members of the incoming 10th National Assembly are looking forward to a reformed Senate, a Senate with sanity and sanctity, a robust Senate, an independent Senate, a Red Chamber with capacity and intergrity that will not be a rubber stamp Senate, a Senate that will effectively play it's proper function as an intermediary between the people, the executive and judiciary; a Senate whose leadership will be devoid of corruption and will be well respected in the committee of nations.
One of the Senators in his opinion said "it is obvious that any of the aspirants with any corruption case will not fit into any of the mentioned descriptions."
When asked the possible direction of the wind in the whole battle? Majority of the Senators said, the election shall be decided at the floor of the red chambers, saying "they are of the view that, there is need for inclusiveness, equity, fairness and political harmony in the distribution of power in the political hemisphere. They lamented that the country is overheated at the moment and therefore the need to consciously take steps to douse prevailing tension. Continuing, the Senators insisted that the Southeast should be allowed to produce the next Senate President since the southwest and the north have been adequately accommodated as President and vice President respectively, to allow for equity, fairness and justice, as the country has operated on a tripod arragment in the past, so as to make way for rapid development of the most populous nation in the world." ■ END
